June in Phuket — Lush, Quiet, and a Little Risky

June is one of Phuket’s most underrated months. Short, intense showers are followed by warm sunshine, temperatures stay between 25–32°C, and popular spots like Karon Beach become far less crowded than the high season — all while hotel prices drop dramatically. Travel And Tour World

But June also marks the start of peak mosquito season, higher humidity, rougher seas, and a sharp rise in seasonal illness. Thailand’s rainy season runs from June through October, and this is the period when Aedes mosquitoes can breed in even the smallest amounts of standing water — making conditions ideal for dengue and other tropical illnesses to spread quickly. Tci-thaijo

At Doctor Karon Clinic, we want every visitor and expat in Karon to enjoy June safely. Here is what to watch out for, how to protect yourself, and when to come and see us.

1. Dengue Fever — The Primary Concern This Season

Dengue is the illness we monitor most closely from June onwards every year, and 2026 is no exception. Early signals in 2026 suggest dengue transmission has continued from 2025 levels, and health officials are actively watching for a seasonal rise as the rains arrive. Critically, Phuket is among the ten provinces officially categorised as a high-risk dengue transmission zone in Thailand. Tci-thaijoPhuket Plus

Symptoms — do not ignore these:

Sudden high fever (39–40°C)

Severe muscle and joint pain — nicknamed “breakbone fever”

Skin rash or red spots, usually appearing 2–5 days after fever onset

Pain behind the eyes

Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite

In serious cases, dengue can progress to dengue haemorrhagic fever, which may cause internal bleeding, organ damage, or in the worst cases, death — making early diagnosis and monitoring absolutely critical. Phuketmedical

Protect yourself:

Apply DEET-based repellent every morning, especially around ankles and wrists

Wear long sleeves and trousers at dawn and dusk — peak mosquito hours

Make sure your room has air conditioning or window screens

Empty any standing water around your accommodation — flower pots, buckets, trays

Important note on medication: Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen if you suspect dengue — these increase the risk of bleeding. Use paracetamol (acetaminophen) only for fever. Phuketmedical

When to see us: If you have a fever lasting more than 48 hours during June in Phuket, come in immediately. We offer rapid dengue testing and IV drip therapy to prevent dangerous dehydration while we monitor your condition.

2. Leptospirosis — The Flood Illness Most Tourists Miss

The primary risk factors for leptospirosis include walking through flooded areas or muddy ground without protective footwear, improper food storage, and contact with contaminated water. Many tourists walk through flooded streets in sandals after heavy downpours without knowing this risk exists at all. Roafly

The bacteria enter through cuts, open skin, or mucous membranes and can cause severe complications if untreated.

Symptoms:

High fever and severe headache

Intense muscle pain, especially in the calves

Red eyes, chills

Nausea or skin rash

In severe cases, leptospirosis can lead to kidney or liver failure.

Prevention:

Avoid wading through floodwater where possible

Cover cuts and abrasions with waterproof dressings before going outdoors

Wear closed shoes after heavy rain

After any contact with floodwater, wash your hands, feet, and body with soap and clean water immediately. Roafly

When to see us: If you develop high fever, headache, or muscle pain after exposure to floodwater or muddy ground, seek medical attention immediately and tell your doctor about the exposure. Leptospirosis responds well to antibiotics when diagnosed early. Roafly

3. Influenza — Rainy Season is Flu Season

The combination of air-conditioned interiors and humid outdoor heat creates the perfect environment for influenza to spread. Thailand’s Department of Disease Control has consistently flagged influenza as one of the top rainy season health risks, particularly for travellers moving between cold indoor spaces and hot outdoor environments multiple times per day.

Symptoms:

Sudden fever and chills

Body aches and deep fatigue

Sore throat and dry cough

Headache

Prevention: The flu vaccine is the most effective protection. Ask our team about getting vaccinated on your next visit — it takes just a few minutes and is available year-round at Doctor Karon Clinic.

When to see us: If your fever exceeds 38.5°C, lasts more than 3 days, or you have an underlying condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease, come in promptly. Antiviral treatment is most effective within the first 48 hours.

4. Skin Infections — Humidity’s Hidden Damage

Wet clothing and constant moisture during the rainy season cause skin infections like athlete’s foot and ringworm to spike. The tropical humidity also means that even minor cuts, insect bites, and grazes can become infected far faster than in cooler climates. doctorkaronclinic

Common issues in June:

Athlete’s foot — itchy, peeling skin between toes

Ringworm — circular red rash, itchy and spreading

Infected insect bites

Wound infections that won’t heal normally

Quick prevention tips:

Dry feet thoroughly every time after rain, the pool, or the beach

Change out of wet clothes promptly

Keep any cuts clean, covered, and monitored daily

Use antifungal powder in shoes during wet weather

When to see us: Any wound that is red, warm, swelling, or showing discharge in Phuket’s June climate needs to be seen quickly. Infections escalate fast here — do not wait it out.

5. Sea Safety — Respect the Red Flags

June brings rough seas to Phuket’s Andaman coast, and officials advise against swimming during strong waves or storm warnings. Red flags at Karon, Kata, and Patong beaches are there for a reason — strong rip currents and sudden swells are responsible for a significant number of tourist drownings every rainy season. Travel And Tour World

Stay safe in the water:

Always obey red and yellow beach flags — no exceptions

Never swim alone or after drinking alcohol

If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore rather than fighting it directly

Keep children away from the shoreline during rough weather

Stick to hotel swimming pools on days with red flags

Emergency: For any water-related emergency, near-drowning, or suspected spinal injury — call us immediately on 064-402tel:0644022666-2666. Our doctor on-call is available 24 hours and can reach your location within 30 minutes.

Open 7 days a week, 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Doctor on-call 24 hours. Hotel and villa visits available across Karon, Kata, Rawai, Chalong, Patong, Tri Trang, Kamala, Surin, and Bang Tao.

February is one of the best months to visit Phuket, Thailand. The weather is sunny, the sea is calm, and the island is alive with events, festivals, and outdoor activities. It is peak tourist season, meaning more celebrations, beach parties, and cultural experiences.

If you are planning to travel to Phuket in February, here is what to expect — and how to prepare for a safe and healthy trip.

Why February is a Great Time to Visit Phuket

Events & Festivals in Phuket in February

1. Chinese New Year (Sometimes in February)

HIGHLIGHTS:

The predominant diseases that may be encountered from splashing water such as cold, flu, respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disease, skin disease and conjunctivitis.

After splashing and playing with water during Songkran, maintaining personal cleanliness is the primary concern.

The weather is typically very hot during the Songkran period so the water festival is seen by many as a cooling relief from the heat of the summer. In the old days, people respectfully sprinkled small amounts of water on others during the day time. Nowadays, they splash water excessively day and night, resulting in frequent changes in body temperature, especially when the water has been chilled with blocks of ice. During the Songkran water festival, getting wet for 3–4 days and travelling around to take part in the water splashing in various places for extended periods of time can make people fall sick, especially children with immature immune systems. Breathing in droplets of contaminated water which contain germs or bacteria might also cause pneumonia. The predominant diseases that may be encountered from splashing water are as follows:

Cold and Flu are commonly found during the Songkran water festival due to frequent changes in body temperature from hot to cold, especially when ice-cold water is used. When children become sick, it is important for them to stop playing with water because the disease may worsen and the children may end up getting influenza or even pneumonia. Parents should observe the symptoms carefully. In case of complications, such as asthma or high fever, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Respiratory Disease may begin when children catch the common cold after being soaking wet for a long time. The particular concern here is that the children or people with weakened immune systems may become sick from travelling around to splash water in various places over an extended period of time. Even in the summer heat, being soaking wet for an extended period can cause the body’s core temperature to drop significantly. Moreover, breathing in droplets of contaminated water which contain germs or bacteria might cause pneumonia. Young children will have unusually fast breathing after they first exhibit the usual symptoms of flu, cold or bronchitis. If left unattended, respiratory failure may occur, leading to lack of oxygen or infection of the blood, and ultimately death.

Heat stroke can occur in children during the summer, especially infants and young children because their metabolic rate is greater than in adults and their bodies are less effective at regulating body heat. In hot weather, people lose body water through sweating, thereby increasing blood viscosity and salt levels in the body. The body then tries to conserve its supply and produce less urine so as to restore water and salt balance. The body needs water to stay hydrated. Severe dehydration may lead to unconsciousness and death.

Gastrointestinal Disease can be caused by inhaling contaminated water during Songkran, eating uncooked food, or drinking contaminated water, causing diarrhea or dysentery. Parents should ensure that their children consume food and drink which are safe, clean and freshly cooked. Medical attention should be sought straight away when children have diarrhea that does not get better within 1 – 2 days and when the children exhibit symptoms of severe dehydration such as tearless crying, lack of urine, lethargy, loss of appetite, high fever, and shaking chills.

Skin Disease can be caused from contaminated talcum powder, water, and clothes that have been wet for a long period of time. Fungal skin infections and allergic reactions such as rashes will appear.

Conjunctivitis is commonly found during Songkran and is caused by having polluted water splashed into the eyes and then rubbing the eyes, thereby increasing the risk of eye infection. Similarly, when talcum powder is rubbed into the eyes without being cleaned or rinsed afterwards, any powder that remains stuck in the eyes will develop irritation, infection and conjunctivitis.

Parents should be aware of the diseases and risks that are common during the Songkran festival, and look after their children accordingly. After splashing and playing with water during Songkran, maintaining personal cleanliness is the primary concern. Children should not splash water and remain wet for several hours at a time, and after finishing, their body and hair should be cleaned and dried thoroughly. Following this simple advice will help prevent respiratory disease and skin infections. People with weakened immune systems should avoid joining in the water activities or going to crowded places.

The Best & Worst Times to Visit Phuket in 2023

Phuket, the biggest island in Thailand, is an ideal getaway for anyone searching for a tropical island vacation. It has all the essentials to make your visit amazing: beautiful hotels, deserted beaches, an international airport, delicious cuisine, stunning scenery, a rich cultural scene, and lively nightlife.

Phuket also has fascinating local traditions and some fantastic food experiences. Phuket caters to visitors of all ages, backgrounds, financial means, and areas of interest.

Tourists may enjoy the benefits of the varied opportunities offered by the three distinct seasons. We’ll help you find the best time to visit Phuket to help you plan your trip and make the most of your time there.

Overall Best Time to Visit Phuket

Phuket often experiences temperatures between 23 to 31 degrees Fahrenheit. After the monsoons have ended, this is the coolest time of year in Phuket.

Almost the year has mild temperatures, with the warmest months being April – May and September – October. However, there is a noticeable variance in rainfall between each month. The southwestern monsoon causes September and October to be the wettest months.

There will still be plenty of time in the sun, even during the monsoon, since rain comes in brief, with scattered showers. Because of the favorable weather between November and February, this is when the greatest number of visitors come to Phuket.

This is the best time of year to enjoy water activities in the calm sea and unwind on one of Phuket’s stunning beaches. Afterward, go to one of the numerous nightclubs and dance till dawn.

The sights and sounds of the island’s sun-kissed beaches, lush jungles, and green mountains will transport you to a world unlike any other. The most admirable aspect about Phuket, especially during peak season, is that it’s suitable for every vacation.

Whether you’re a group of friends on a trip, a honeymooning couple, a solitary traveler searching for excitement and new experiences, or a family just trying to get away from it all, you will surely enjoy the place.

Least Busy Time to Visit Phuket

Start from April! After the peak season (November – Febuary), when most visitors have left Phuket, it is a great time to go. It’s constantly hot, even in the monsoon season, with an average temperature of roughly 30 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall is heavier but short-lived during these months, leaving plenty of time to take in the sights, relax by the hotel pool, and experience the dazzling sunsets that this time of year is known for.

If you end up with some rainy days, you won’t be bored since there are many enjoyable options. If you’re expecting European-style precipitation, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

When it finally does rain in Phuket, everyone is relieved since the showers provide a welcome reprieve from the scorching heat. Since the weather seldom fluctuates much, you can get by with only shorts and a t-shirt all year round.

This allows for greater purchases on vacations and less packing hassle at home. One drawback of swimming in the ocean during the off-season is the risk of rip currents. Please pay close attention to the warning signs at beaches and do not enter the water if they are there.

Songkran Festival Phuket happens on April 13, 2023. The dates vary depending on Thailand’s regions, and the festival can last several days in the north.

Songkran festival on a normal year

If you choose to come to Phuket or Thailand in April in a ‘normal year’, you’d better know what this event is about. Songkran is the Thai New Year, which occurs when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries. According to the Thai calendar, we are already in the year 2565. The country gets many days off, and most Thai people will go back home to celebrate Songkran with their families.

Where is the Best Place?

You can join Songkran wet street parties from early morning if you are of the first kind. It starts rather gently in Phuket Town around 10 am, turns to water dogfights in the afternoon in Patong, Kata and Karon, and ends in a hectic, full-scale wet war zone in Bangla Road until late night.

Shops and supermarkets make fortunes selling all kinds of colourful and humongous water guns. But the best weapon remains the good old plastic bowl and a big tank of icy cold water! Everybody will join the Songkran festivities, kids, teens, adults and tourists, divided into two camps: the ‘Strategically Ambushed‘ by the roadside with plenty of water ammunition and the ‘Mobile Units‘ fully loaded at the back of pickup trucks.

Cops doing traffic and security on the road are always the favourite targets for everyone, but they are used to this and keep a smile all day or even play along.

Survival Tips for Songkran Day

Don’t drive a bike if you can avoid it: it’s slippery, and the tendency to close your eyes when people throw water at you might lead to a crash with the car in front of you. And many drunk people will be out there partying, including you :D.

Get a waterproof camera; the chance of ruining yours is pretty high!

If you are unfortunate enough to go to Phuket airport on that day, go as early as possible, preferably in the morning. Beware of major traffic jams in towns, mostly in Patong Beach. It might take you several hours to cross it.

Don’t carry anything that is not water-resistant.

Don’t wear expensive clothing; I’m not sure how easy it would be to wash some teens’ colour powder thrown at you.

Beware of the Sun! If you are on the back of a pickup truck, get a cap and water-resistant sunscreen, or you will pay a painful price the days after!

Have fun! Don’t take it too seriously; it’s good fun (if you choose to go out there).

Explore the beauty of Thailand on the mesmerizing Phuket Island. Phuket is a traveler’s paradise with thousands of turquoise bays and pristine shorelines. Discover the best things to do in Phuket and plan your dream getaway now!

In the mood for a beachy holiday at a luxury resort and self-care spa days? Don’t forget this beach vacation packing list! Or maybe you’re ready to party and explore the famous nightlife.

There’s so much to choose from! And the good news is that many of these awesome things to do in Phuket don’t cost a great deal of money.

Where is Phuket?

Phuket is Thailand’s largest province in the southern region. It’s an exotic paradise located in the Andaman Sea, spanning an area of 543 km². It’s also home to the country’s largest island, Phuket Island.

What you should know about Phuket

If you’re looking to travel somewhere beautiful while still staying within your budget, Phuket should be at the top of your list! But why?

What’s Phuket best known for?

It’s hard to mention one specialty of Phuket because it’s well-known for many things.

But in a nutshell, this is what you can expect:

Unique beaches

Exciting nightlife

Eye-catching street markets

Mouth-watering cuisine a

Giant white marble Buddha

Scuba diving

What are the dos and don’ts in Phuket?

Any place you travel to expects you to follow the local laws. Phuket is no exception. In Phuket, these are some common things to do and avoid:

Show respect for the Thai National Anthem

Respect Thai customs and culture

Avoid touching the head of Thai people

Avoid underdressing in public

Remove your shoes when visiting temples or someone’s home

Dress appropriately at mosques.

If you visit a mosque, men should wear a hat, and women should dress modestly and wear a head covering such as a scarf or a shawl.

What can you do in Phuket in 4 days?

Hiking

Scuba diving

Mountain climbing

Visit the beaches!

Tips for visiting Phuket

Phuket has earned the title “The Pearl of the Andaman” because of its stunning beaches. When visiting a beach paradise, you can expect the weather to be scorching hot.

So it’s ideal to have sunscreen in your backpack at all times.

The Thai Baht is Phuket’s national currency, and you’ll find countless money exchange stores nearby.

Finally, if you plan on visiting attractions, remember that people in most places in Phuket don’t speak English fluently. Consider hiring a translator to help you communicate.

Where to Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Phuket

There are many places to celebrate the New Year in Phuket – too many to individually list. Fortunately, they can be broken down into general areas, based on the types of parties they provide. There’s a certain amount of variety available, but they all offer a fun and friendly atmosphere, making for a memorable evening.

There’s no special significance about New Year in Thai culture. This is mostly because Thai and Buddhist New Year is Songkran, which comes around in April. However, the local people love any excuse to have a party, meaning that there are sure to be plenty of special events organised all over Phuket for the New Year. Being the heart of the island’s nightlife, most will be in and around Patong. Even so, that doesn’t necessarily mean anyone staying on other beaches needs to miss out, as you’ll see below.

1. Phuket’s beaches

Each December, the more popular beaches around Phuket become effectively giant parties. Hundreds gather on the sand to see in the new year. Patong Beach usually has organised music and entertainments, but most of the others don’t. However, with people bringing their own fireworks, floating lanterns, drinks and more, it creates a very festive atmosphere and a fun place to be.

Patong Beach is definitely the most popular choice, but you’ll also find celebrations on Karon, Kata, Kamala and Bangtao beaches, among others

2. Phuket beach clubs

For those who want the beach party atmosphere with a little more coordination, a beach club is a great place to celebrate New Years in Phuket. The beach clubs around Phuket are already great places to party, so they naturally make excellent places to be on 31st December, with first-class DJ sets, fine food and fancy cocktails. Among the best are Catch Beach Club, Café Del Mar Phuket and Paradise Beach Club.

3. Bangla Road

Phuket’s party central comes to life for New Year celebrations in a way you won’t see at any other time, except possibly for Songkran. While Patong’s popular nightlife street is busy most evenings, it’s absolutely packed on the last one of the year. Every bar is busy and the atmosphere is one of rowdy exuberance. Expect loud music, drinks flowing and big crowds. Spots like Red Hot and Aussie Bar are likely to be among the more popular choices.

4. Nightclubs in Phuket

Arguably the highlight of Bangla Road – and worthy of a separate mention – are the nightclubs. The main ones each have special events for New Year, featuring great guest DJs and drinks offers. They’ll often have some kind of theme for the night, so check out their Facebook pages to properly prepare yourself. The best places to party are likely to be Illuzion and White Room.

5. Paradise Plaza

The heart of the gay nightlife in Patong, Paradise Plaza is a lively place on any evening of the year. Just like Bangla Road, it’s especially fun on 31 December. It’s a fun place to party, whatever your orientation (so long as you’re open-minded and have a robust sense of humour), and a great place to celebrate the New Year in Phuket. Among the most popular venues are Boat Bar and Zag Club.

6. Hotels in Phuket

Many hotels around Phuket will have special gala dinners and parties for the New Year celebrations. In some cases, this requires a mandatory additional cost, which can come as an unpleasant shock. Be sure to check what your hotel is planning in advance. In some cases, the cost is entirely justified by an exceptional meal, fireworks, music and dancing. This is certainly the most family-friendly way to celebrate the event.

A stool analysis is a series of tests done on a stool (feces) sample to help diagnose certain conditions affecting the digestive tract. These conditions can include infection (such as from parasites, viruses, or bacteria), poor nutrient absorption, or cancer.

For a stool analysis, a stool sample is collected in a clean container and then sent to the laboratory. Laboratory analysis includes microscopic examination, chemical tests, and microbiologic tests. The stool will be checked for color, consistency, amount, shape, odor, and the presence of mucus. The stool may be examined for hidden (occult) blood, fat, meat fibers, bile, white blood cells, and sugars called reducing substances. The pH of the stool also may be measured. A stool culture is done to find out if bacteria may be causing an infection.

Stool Examination – Part 1 – Stool Analysis , Stool for ova and parasite, Complete Stool studies

Sample

A random stool sample can be taken.

More than 2 grams of the stool is needed

To rule out worm infestation three consecutive stools are tested.

Collect three stools in the span of 10 days.

Two samples on alternate days.

One sample after purgation.

Collect the sample in clean, dry urine free container.

In the case of Infants, collect from the diaper.

Precautions

Advise patients for the following things for at least 48 hours before the collection of the stool:

Avoid mineral oils.

Do not take bismuth.

Antibiotics like tetracyclines.

Anti-diarrheal drugs which are non-absorbent.

Avoid anti-malarial drugs.

The patient should not have a barium swallow examination before the stool examination.

For occult blood stop iron-containing drugs, meat and fish at least 48 hours before the collection.

Warm stools are better for the ova and parasites.

Don’t refrigerate the stool for ova and parasites.

Stool for ova and parasites can be collected in formalin and polyvinyl alcohol. These are used as a fixative.

If there is blood or mucus, that should be included in the stool. Because most of the pathogens are found in this substance.

Exam the stool before giving antibiotic or other drugs.

Semi-formed stool should be examined within 60 minutes of collection.

Liquid stool should be examined within the first 30 minutes.

Solid stool should be examined within the first hour of collection.

Trophozoites degenerate in liquid stool rapidly, so exam the stool within 30 minutes.

In the case of constipated cases, use non-residual purgative on the night before the collection of the stool.

Stool preservatives are:

Preservatives for the wet preparation are:

10% formol-saline for the wet preparation. This is best preservatives as it kills the bacteria and preserves the protozoa and helminths.

Sodium acetate formalin.

Methionate iodine formalin. This is a good preservative for the field collection of the stool.

For staining use Polyvinyl alcohol.

Avoid preservatives for the culture of stool.

Usually three parts of the preservatives and one part of the stool.

Indication

To evaluate the function and integrity of the GI tract.

To rule out the presence of WBCs and RBCs.

To find ova or parasites.

To see the presence of fat for malabsorption syndrome.

For screening of colon cancer.

For asymptomatic ulceration of GI tract.

Evaluate diseases in the presence of diarrhea and constipation.

Summary of stool studies are done to evaluate:

Intestinal bleeding.

Infestation.

Inflammatory diseases.

Malabsorption.

Different causes of diarrhea.

Pathophysiology

watery stools.

Thin stools.

Pellet-like stools.

Dry or hard stools found in constipated patients.

Puttylike stools.

small round hard stool is due to habitual constipation.

Pasty stools are due to high-fat contents and seen in:

common bile duct obstruction.

Celiac disease. stool looks like aluminum paint.

Cystic fibrosis due to pancreatic involvement and are greasy.

Diarrheal stools are watery.

Steatorrhea stool is:

Large in amount.

Frothy.

Foul smelling.

Constipated stools are firm and may see spherical masses.

Ribbon-like stool suggests the spastic bowel, rectal narrowing, stricture, or partial obstruction.

The very hard stool is due to excessive absorption of water due to prolonged contact with colonic mucosa.

Color

Normal color is due to the presence of stercobilinogen.

Yellow or yellow-green color is seen in diarrhea.

Black and tarry (related with consistency) stools are due to bleeding of upper GI tract from tumors.

Maroon or pink color is from lower GI tract due to tumors, hemorrhoids, fissure, or inflammatory process.

Clay-colored stools are due to biliary tract obstruction.

Mucous in the stool indicate constipation, colitis or malignancy.

Pale color with greasy appearance is due to pancreatic deficiency leading to malabsorption.

The color of the stool

8. REd streaks of blood on feces

Bleeding from the hemorrhoids, fissure, ulcerative lesion or carcinoma of rectum or anus.

Quantity

Normally there is 100 to 200 G/day.

With vegetable diet may be 250 g/day.

Many disorders cause large, bulky stools even in people who don’t eat a lot.

Like malabsorption syndrome, and carbohydrate indigestion.

The size of your stools has more to do with how well you digest your foods than how much you eat.

Some types of foods produce larger stools because they don’t break down completely.

Some gastrointestinal disorders also cause poor food breakdown and absorption, which leads to large, bulky stools.

Odor

The foul odor is caused by the undigested protein and by excessive intake of carbohydrate.

Stool odor is caused by indole and skatole which are formed by the bacterial fermentation and putrefaction.

A bad odor which is sickly produced by undigested lactose and fatty acids.

The odor is increased due to excess intake of proteins.

The putrid odor is due to severe diarrhea of malignancy or gangrenous dysentery.

Mucous

Mucous is produced by the mucosa of the colon in response to parasympathetic stimulation

Pure mucous is translucent gelatinous material clinging to the surface of the stool. This may be seen in:

Severe constipation.

Mucous colitis.

Excessive straining of the stool.

emotionally unstable patient.

Mucous in diarrhea with microscopically present with RBCs and WBCs is seen in:

Bacillary dysentery.

Ulcerative colitis.

Intestinal tuberculosis.

amoebiasis.

Enteritis.

Acute diverticulitis.

ulcerating malignancy of the colon.

Mucus with blood which is clinging to stool is seen in:

Malignancies of the colon.

Inflammatory lesion of rectal canal.

An excessive amount of mucus seen in:

Villous adenoma of the colon.

This depends upon the dietary intake.

PH

Normally stool is slightly acidic or alkaline or neutral.

pH is 7.0 to 7.5 depending on the diet.

Newborn pH = 5.0 to 7.5.

pH of the stool depends upon the diet and bacterial fermentation in the small intestine.

Carbohydrate changes the pH to acidic while the protein breakdown changes to alkaline.

Breastfed infants pH has a slightly acidic stool.

Bottle fed infants have a slightly alkaline stool.

pH stool test helps to evaluate carbohydrate and fat malabsorption.

pH stool also helps to know disaccharidase deficiency.

Alkaline (Increased pH) stool is seen in:

Colitis.

Villous adenoma.

Diarrhea.

Antibiotic therapy.

Excess intake of proteins.

Acidic (Decreased pH) stool seen in:

Fat malabsorption.

Disaccharidase deficiency.

Carbohydrate malabsorption.

Excess intake of carbohydrates.

Precautions for pH estimation:

Barium intake and laxatives change the pH.

If the specimen is contaminated with the urine, will need to discard the sample.

Reducing Substances

Please see details of Reducing substances in the stool on the following link.

http://www.labpedia.net/test/128

Microscopic Examination

This is the preliminary examination to find the cause of diarrhea.

Presence of Leukocytes Normally there are no WBCs.

WBCs only appear in infection or inflammation.

Their presence is important in case of diarrhea or dysentery.

>3 WBCs /high field are seen in ulcerative colitis and bacterial infection.

Greater numbers of WBCs indicate invasive pathogens.

Virus and parasites don’t cause WBCs in the stool.

Increased number of WBCs in the stool.

Bacillary dysentery.

chronic ulcerative colitis.

Shigellosis.

salmonella infection.

Yersinia infection.

Invasive E.coli diarrhea.

Fistula of anus or rectum.

Localized abscess.

Few WBCs are seen in amoebiasis.

Also, WBCs are seen in typhoid.

The absence of WBCs seen in some of the diarrhoeal conditions alike:

Cholera.

Viral diarrhea.

Drug-induced diarrhea.

Amoebic colitis.

Non-invasive E.coli diarrhoea.

Parasitic infestation.

Toxigenic bacterial infection.

Presence of Red Blood Cells in the stool.Blood in the stool can be:

Bright red from the bleeding in the lower GI tract.

Maroon in color.

Black and tarry from bleeding from the upper GI tract.

Occult blood (not visible to the naked eye).

Causes of blood in stool:

Hemorrhoids.

Cancer.

Dysentery.

Make smear from the mucus area or from the watery stool.

Please see more details in the occult blood.
