February is one of the best months to visit Phuket, Thailand. The weather is sunny, the sea is calm, and the island is alive with events, festivals, and outdoor activities. It is peak tourist season, meaning more celebrations, beach parties, and cultural experiences.

If you are planning to travel to Phuket in February, here is what to expect — and how to prepare for a safe and healthy trip.

Why February is a Great Time to Visit Phuket

February falls during Phuket’s dry season, offering:

Clear blue skies

Calm ocean conditions

Perfect beach weather

Ideal conditions for island hopping and diving

This is also the month when many international tourists visit, making it one of the most vibrant periods of the year.

Events & Festivals in Phuket in February

1. Chinese New Year (Sometimes in February)

Depending on the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year often falls in late January or February. Phuket has a strong Thai-Chinese heritage, especially in Phuket Old Town.

Expect:

Dragon and lion dances

Firecrackers and cultural performances

Street markets and food stalls

Red lantern decorations throughout town

Phuket Old Town becomes especially lively during this time.

2. Makha Bucha Day (Buddhist Holiday)

Makha Bucha is an important Buddhist day that sometimes falls in February. Visitors may see:

With so many outdoor activities, it’s important to prepare your health properly.

What to Prepare for Your Health in February

Even though February has beautiful weather, certain health risks remain — especially for travelers.

Anti-itch cream

Basic antihistamines if you are allergy-prone

Packing a small medical kit with bandages and antiseptic is helpful.

As the end of the year approaches, the vibrant island of Phuket gears up for an explosion of festivities that paint the town in hues of celebration. While New Year’s Eve may not hold traditional significance in Thai culture, the locals are always up for a good party. In this extensive guide, we’ll share our top picks for where to countdown in Phuket, from its famous beaches to the cultural heart of Old Phuket Town and the lively Bangla Road.

Where to Countdown in Phuket?

1.Phuket’s Beaches

Phuket’s sandy shores transform into colossal party venues each December, with Patong Beach taking the lead. However, other beaches like Karon, Kata, Paradise, and Bangtao also host their share of revelry. Picture hundreds gathered on the sand, creating a festive atmosphere with personal fireworks, floating lanterns, and libations. Each beach carries its unique charm, providing a variety of experiences for ushering in the New Year.

Patong Beach

No list of the best beaches in Phuket could be complete without mentioning Patong. Undoubtedly the most popular stretch of coastline on the island, being generally busy right along its 2.5 km length. However, there’ is no part of Phuket with a livelier atmosphere. The town behind the beach is home to many great restaurants and hotels, as well as the best of Phuket’s nightlife, while the beach itself has nice sand and offers plenty of attractions and activities.

Karon Beach

Karon Beach has the interesting honour of having the squeakiest sand in Phuket. Fine and soft, it makes a funny sound when you walk on it. At 3.3 km in length, it’s the third-longest beach in Phuket and is close to being perfectly straight. It’s beautifully lined with trees for a lot of the southern end, with volleyball nets and beachfront restaurants in the northern half. The sea here is very approachable, though it is noted for its strong riptides in the low season. There are virtually no rocks along the length of the beach, so you can take a cooling dip with no risk of hurting your feet.

Kata Beach

Kata Beach has it all – beautiful soft sand, nodding palm trees, clean waters with a soft seabed, good surfing in the low season, and snorkelling in the high season, and a fantastic laid-back atmosphere. Colourful long-tail boats are moored at the northern end, with a few budget food and drinks vendors often found nearby, while the southern end has a choice of beachfront hotels and restaurants and an exciting flow rider park at Surf House. At about 1.5 km in length, Kata Beach doesn’t usually get too crowded, either.

Bangtao Beach

At 6 km in length, Bangtao is one of the longest beaches in Phuket. Along that length, you’ll find some of the island’s top hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs, making it a popular place for all kinds of visitors and locals. While the scenery is perhaps not as picturesque and the sand not as soft as some of Phuket’s other notable beaches, Bangtao is still one of the best beaches in Phuket, thanks to the sheer variety of nearby attractions and the sheer size. This simply means it’s never that hard to find a quiet spot to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Nai Harn Beach

For a more laid-back yet enchanting New Year’s Eve, Nai Harn Beach stands out among the Phuket beaches. Nestled on the island’s southern tip, Nai Harn offers a tranquil escape from the bustling crowds. The beach, surrounded by lush green hills, provides a serene backdrop for a more intimate celebration. As the sun sets over the Andaman Sea, beachgoers can enjoy the picturesque view, making it an ideal spot for a romantic countdown. While the festivities here are not as grandiose as Patong, the intimate setting and natural beauty make Nai Harn a hidden gem for those seeking a more relaxed and contemplative start to the new year.

Banana Rock Beach

For adventurous souls seeking a unique New Year’s experience, Banana Rock Beach is the offbeat choice that promises a memorable celebration. Tucked away from the mainstream party scenes, this secluded beach provides an exclusive setting for a more private and personalised countdown. The rugged coastline and pristine sands create a canvas for an unconventional celebration. Whether you bring your own fireworks or simply enjoy the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, Banana Rock Beach offers a tranquil escape for those looking to welcome the new year with a touch of solitude and adventure. As the clock strikes midnight, the unspoiled beauty of Banana Rock Beach sets the stage for a one-of-a-kind start to the year.

Additionally, for those who want a beach party atmosphere with a little more coordination, a beach club is a great place to celebrate New Year in Phuket. The beach clubs around Phuket are already great places to party, so they naturally make excellent places to be on 31st December, with first-class DJ sets, fine food, and fancy cocktails.

2.Old Phuket Town – The Cultural Countdown

While the beaches offer a more laid-back ambience, Old Phuket Town presents a cultural and historical setting for the countdown. Amidst the charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, the streets come alive with art, music, and local performances. It’s a different flavour of celebration, perfect for those seeking a break from the beach party scene.

3.Bangla Road

On New Year’s Eve 2024 in Phuket, Bangla Road, Phuket’s party central, transforms into a lively spectacle reminiscent of Songkran. The bustling nightlife street kicks into high gear, with every bar pulsating with energy. Loud music, flowing drinks, and exuberant crowds define the atmosphere, providing a unique experience that sets this night apart from the rest of the year.

4.Paradise Plaza

Arguably the highlight of Bangla Road—and worthy of a separate mention—are the nightclubs. The main ones each have special events for New Year, featuring great guest DJs and drinks offers. They’ll often have some kind of theme for the night, so check out their offerings for an unforgettable night.

For those seeking a more coordinated beach party experience, Paradise Plaza is an excellent choice. The beach clubs in this area elevate the celebration with top-notch DJ sets, delectable food, and exquisite cocktails. It’s a refined way to welcome the New Year against the backdrop of Phuket’s stunning coastal scenery.

Songkran Festival Phuket happens on April 13, 2023. The dates vary depending on Thailand’s regions, and the festival can last several days in the north.

Songkran festival on a normal year

If you choose to come to Phuket or Thailand in April in a ‘normal year’, you’d better know what this event is about. Songkran is the Thai New Year, which occurs when the sun moves from Pisces to Aries. According to the Thai calendar, we are already in the year 2565. The country gets many days off, and most Thai people will go back home to celebrate Songkran with their families.

Where is the Best Place?

You can join Songkran wet street parties from early morning if you are of the first kind. It starts rather gently in Phuket Town around 10 am, turns to water dogfights in the afternoon in Patong, Kata and Karon, and ends in a hectic, full-scale wet war zone in Bangla Road until late night.

Shops and supermarkets make fortunes selling all kinds of colourful and humongous water guns. But the best weapon remains the good old plastic bowl and a big tank of icy cold water! Everybody will join the Songkran festivities, kids, teens, adults and tourists, divided into two camps: the ‘Strategically Ambushed‘ by the roadside with plenty of water ammunition and the ‘Mobile Units‘ fully loaded at the back of pickup trucks.

Cops doing traffic and security on the road are always the favourite targets for everyone, but they are used to this and keep a smile all day or even play along.

Survival Tips for Songkran Day

Don’t drive a bike if you can avoid it: it’s slippery, and the tendency to close your eyes when people throw water at you might lead to a crash with the car in front of you. And many drunk people will be out there partying, including you :D.

Get a waterproof camera; the chance of ruining yours is pretty high!

If you are unfortunate enough to go to Phuket airport on that day, go as early as possible, preferably in the morning. Beware of major traffic jams in towns, mostly in Patong Beach. It might take you several hours to cross it.

Don’t carry anything that is not water-resistant.

Don’t wear expensive clothing; I’m not sure how easy it would be to wash some teens’ colour powder thrown at you.

Beware of the Sun! If you are on the back of a pickup truck, get a cap and water-resistant sunscreen, or you will pay a painful price the days after!

Have fun! Don’t take it too seriously; it’s good fun (if you choose to go out there).

Ready to plan your trip and maximize fun while keeping to the budget? Here’s a list of the seven top-rated things to do in Phuket and the cheapest places to visit.

While there are countless things to do in Phuket, Thailand, the following are some top-rated activities.

7. Visit the old Phuket town

You’ll find a vast range of restaurants, bars, and shops in Phuket Town. A food tour of The Old Town comes highly recommended!

Here you can taste the best local delicacies and get the inside scoop on all the history. The town has a historic vibe with its narrow streets, alleyways, and century-old Sino-Portuguese townhouses.

Some of the top places to visit in Phuket’s Old Town are Phuket Weekend Market, Phuket Thai Hua Museum, and Night Sunday Market.

6. Chill out on sandy beaches

Relaxing on one of the many beaches is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Phuket. You can sunbathe and chill at several beaches, including Kata Beach, Banana Beach, and Bang Tao Beach. The beaches are a great way to spend an afternoon.

5. Hang out with friends at nightclubs in Phuket

If you’re looking for a fun, energetic night out with friends, then a nightclub is the best place to go in Phuket.

All the bars and clubs in Phuket are tourist friendly and serve food and drinks. There are a plethora of popular nightclubs, such as Hollywood Phuket and Tiger Nightclub.

4. Appreciate the great architecture at the buddha statue

The Big Buddha is one of the best attractions in Phuket. If you catch a sightseeing boat, it will take you around the island and provide an excellent view of this massive statue.

You can view the monument from anywhere on the island. However, it’s exceptionally breathtaking at night. The Buddha appears golden because of the lights reflecting off its surface, making it among the best things to do in Phuket at night.

3. Enjoy the Phuket Fantasea Show

Are you curious about Thailand’s customs and history? Visit the Phuket FantaSea theme park! This cultural theme park boasts a 45-minute light and musical extravaganza showcasing traditional Thai culture and folklore.

The Fantasea Show is fun for all ages and another one of the great things to do in Phuket at night. You can enjoy an evening of water acrobatics, dancing, and explosions set to popular songs.

2. Watch the sunset at Promthep Cape

Are you looking for the best romantic spot in Phuket? Promthep Cape is one of them!

Located in Rawai, Mueang Phuket District, it’s an ideal location where you can get panoramic views of the entire island.

Don’t forget to take sweet sunset selfies with your loved ones here and catch the golden sunset.

1. Explore Phuket’s history at the Trickeye museum

Are you looking for great things to do in Phuket with your family and friends of all ages?

Head to the Phuket Trickeye Museum and immerse yourself in optical illusions and an interactive 3D painting exhibition. It’s Phuket’s first interactive 3D museum focusing on how life was centuries ago on this beautiful island.

Keeping track of your Phuket itinerary

Whether you’re there for a quick getaway or an extended stay, Phuket is the jewel of southern Thailand and is definitely worth visiting.

This region is attractive for reasons other than the sun, beach, and sea. You can also find some great cultural experiences in Phuket and all across Thailand.

With so many appealing things to do in Phuket, it’s easy to get caught up in browsing and researching. The trick is keeping track of all your ideas.
