Loy Krathong is a beautiful Thai festival celebrated by floating krathongs (decorative floating vessels) on water to pay respect to the Water Goddess and ask for blessings. Phuket is a lovely place to celebrate this festival, with various scenic spots hosting activities. Here are the top five places to enjoy Loy Krathong in Phuket:

Patong Beach: Known for its vibrant atmosphere, Patong Beach hosts a lively Loy Krathong celebration. The beach transforms with numerous krathongs floating in the sea, creating a mesmerizing view. You’ll also find vendors selling traditional krathongs, food stalls, and sometimes even fireworks to enhance the festivities.

Saphan Hin Park: Located in Phuket Town, Saphan Hin Park is one of the most popular spots for Loy Krathong. The large pond here provides the perfect setting for launching krathongs. The park also hosts a variety of cultural performances, food vendors, and activities, making it a great spot for families and locals alike.

Karon Lake: Karon Lake, near Karon Beach, is another popular place to celebrate Loy Krathong. The lake offers a tranquil setting for floating krathongs, and the area often hosts small celebrations with food and music, making it an excellent choice for a quieter, more serene experience.

Bang Wad Dam (Kathu): This scenic reservoir in Kathu offers a unique and peaceful atmosphere for Loy Krathong. While it’s less crowded than the main tourist areas, many locals come here to release their krathongs. It’s an ideal place to experience a more traditional and intimate celebration of Loy Krathong.

Laguna Phuket: This luxury resort complex in Bang Tao Beach organizes an annual Loy Krathong celebration that includes traditional Thai music, dance performances, and krathong-floating activities on the Laguna’s scenic waterways. It’s a beautiful and upscale setting to enjoy the festival.

IV therapy has moved from hospitals to luxury spas, hotels and Clinics

Once just in hospitals, IV drips have become a crossover sensation in the health, wellness and travel sphere. Travelers previously had to rely on pain killers and sunglasses (hangover), melatonin (jet lag), or copious amounts of caffeine or sleep (exhaustion) to recover from travel-related afflictions. Now, they are hooking up to IVs to erase the excesses that could derail their vacation. And you don’t have to venture far to find them. IV drips are popping up in hotel spas, resorts, casinos and shopping districts. You can even order one from the cushiness of your rental property or hotel room.

“People get really dehydrated when they travel. They get hangovers and sun exposure. They’re at high altitudes when they’re flying,” said Sarah Muniz, director of clinical operations at PureDropIV, which serves the D.C. area and counts Tofel as a client. “Having the ability to get the hydration and B-12 vitamins and vitamin C really helps people bounce back.”

According to the Global Wellness Institute, there were 7,000 medical spas worldwide and thousands of IV drip centers and facilities last year, including hotel spas, wellness retreats and mobile clinics. Restore Hyper Wellness, for instance, has more than 225 locations. Reviv boasts clinics in nearly 50 countries.

The mechanics of the drip

Depending on state requirements, you may have to meet with a licensed medical practitioner for a consultation and vitals check before a drip. The treatment is usually administered by a registered nurse or a professional with comparable training. Some conditions could preclude you from treatment, such as pregnancy or certain heart, liver or kidney diseases.

From claims of “boosting” the immune system and alleviating hangovers to supporting weight loss and reducing the signs of aging, the purported benefits of intravenous (IV) therapy are as numerous as the vitamin and mineral cocktails available. While anecdotal evidence supports the potential benefits of IV hydration and vitamin therapy, scientific research is lacking.

Read on to learn about both elective IV therapies and those used in hospital settings, as well as potential benefits, side effects, risks and associated costs.

What Is IV Therapy?

IV therapy is a method of administering fluids, medications or vitamins directly into a patient’s bloodstream intravenously to address a variety of medical conditions, including nutritional deficits.

”The goal of [IV] treatment [in a hospital setting] is to replenish substances that the body has become deficient in due to underlying medical conditions,” explains Eileen O’Sullivan, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist in Portland, Oregon. “Certain medications require IV administration if they’re needed very quickly or cannot be administered or absorbed by the body via another route,” she adds. For example, if an individual can’t take their medications orally due to vomiting or if they need an urgent dose of antibiotics due to a severe infection or sepsis, they would need IV therapy.

Medically necessary IV treatments are traditionally administered in hospitals or infusion centers, which are outpatient, non-hospital facilities that are qualified for provider-administered medication infusions. In recent years, however, independent boutiques and community providers offering elective IV hydration and vitamin therapies are becoming increasingly popular. Despite this rising popularity, there’s insufficient scientific evidence to substantiate the purported benefits of non-medical IV therapy, says Dr. O’Sullivan. However, the risks are clearly understood, she adds.

When it comes to IV therapies administered for non-traditional purposes outside of a hospital setting, marketing typically focuses on “wellness,” which can be a vague term, notes Dr. O’Sullivan.

This loose categorization may also account for the scarcity of high-quality research: “Wellness” is difficult to test and measure and is, to some extent, subjective. “If a person is fatigued, there’s [no diagnosis or treatment] in the hospital that says, ‘You’re fatigued—here’s an IV bag,’” says Mordeána Williams, a doctor of nursing practice and owner of VitaMineral IV Therapy Drip Center in New York City.

Dr. Williams says she works with many patients who experience fatigue or brain fog or feel generally run down. “They tell me how they’re feeling, I ask them if they have bloodwork, [and] if they don’t, I do a full history and physical, and then I decide—based on what they’re experiencing—what vitamins to recommend [via IV therapy].”

What Is IV Vitamin Therapy?

IV vitamin therapy introduces vitamins into the body intravenously to address a deficiency or physical condition. Disorders that may necessitate an IV vitamin treatment include pernicious anemia, diarrhea and malabsorption issues caused by damage to the intestines. An IV treatment is also often utilized after surgery, following acute kidney injury or when a patient has suffered major burns.

The dosage in an IV treatment contains a higher concentration than what might be found in an oral vitamin supplement. Plus, vitamins introduced into the body through an IV may be absorbed more efficiently than those ingested orally.

“The aim is to achieve a balance,” notes Dr. O’Sullivan. “The body is designed to function with vitamin levels [within] a specific range; medical conditions can result when there’s excess or deficiency.” Similar to IV hydration therapy, the goal of IV vitamin therapy in a medical setting is to correct these imbalances and prevent problems that could result should the deficiency go unaddressed.

Potential Benefits of IV Vitamin Therapy

If you perform a web search for a nearby IV vitamin therapy provider, you’re likely to come across offerings like “Immunity Drip,” “Beauty Booster” or “Jetlag Bag”—cocktails of vitamins and minerals formulated to address a vast array of concerns, including fatigue, brain fog and chronic pain. However, even if an IV vitamin supercharge may intuitively seem beneficial, there’s little scientific evidence to support the proposed benefits of high-dose IV vitamin infusions.

“While the notion of high vitamin and hydration levels may sound appealing, the boring truth is that the body has tightly regulated mechanisms that keep our fluid status and vitamin levels in a specific range,” explains Dr. O’Sullivan.

IV vitamin therapy is an effective and efficient way to correct deficiencies and counteract the negative effects of certain medical conditions that cause vitamin imbalances; however, there’s insufficient research and evidence to support claims that vitamin therapy provides great benefits to someone with normal vitamin levels, she reiterates.

Certain vitamin deficiencies are prevalent among certain populations in the U.S., but these rates can vary significantly based on demographics. For instance, while about 25% of the U.S. population may have inadequate vitamin D levels, these insufficiencies are much more common among individuals with darker skin, as well as older adults, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements[2].

When Dr. Williams opened her IV drip center during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she encountered many patients who were surprised to learn about their own vitamin deficiencies.

“I started [the center during] COVID because I realized so many people got sick because they thought they were healthy.” For instance, vitamin D plays an important role in regulating appropriate immune responses in your body, and a deficiency can make an individual more vulnerable to infections. In fact, a recent review in Antioxidants concludes a deficiency in vitamin D3 may increase COVID-19 infection risk, as well as the severity of the illness[3].

While research indicates that vitamin D deficiencies can be adequately addressed with appropriate oral supplementation, Dr. Williams promotes IV vitamin infusion because of its immediate bioavailability. “It goes into your vein—you’re not losing anything in your gut,” she explains.

IV therapy is a common practice in hospital settings and independent clinics, but complications can occur, including infection at the insertion site or “fluid creep” or “volume overload,” in which excess fluid in the bloodstream can spill out into the lungs or other tissues, causing dangerous complications, such as pulmonary edema or even cardiac failure.

In the case of IV vitamin therapy, once adequate vitamin levels are reached, the body typically removes excess vitamins via urination, explains Dr. O’Sullivan. However, excess of certain vitamins, such as fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, can result in harmful toxicity to internal organs, she warns.

To mitigate these risks, it’s important that a trained medical professional oversee the administration of IV therapies. However, not all clinics have the same level of oversight because regulation guidelines for infusion therapies vary state by state.

In recent years, marketing claims by some IV therapy bars made unsupported claims that their IV vitamin infusions could treat serious diseases. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged one seller with making deceptive promises about their IV cocktails’ abilities to treat cancer, congestive heart failure and multiple sclerosis[4]. More recently, the FTC sent warning letters to another IV therapy center for making unsubstantiated claims regarding its product’s ability to treat COVID-19 effectively

Malaria

Disease background: One of the main mosquito-borne diseases in Thailand, Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The symptoms include high fever, headache, and chills.

The wide development of parasite resistance to medicines is reported to reach more than 20 to 50 percent in Mekong area. Do keep in mind that Thailand has multidrug-resistant malaria.

Risk and prevalence: Persons travelling or through rural and forested areas across the country should be made aware of this risk. Malaria is primarily found in provinces that border Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, and Laos and the provinces of Kalasin, Krabi (Plai Phraya district), Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phang Nga (including Phang Nga City), Rayong, Sakon Nakhon, Songkhla, Surat Thani, and Yala. Occasional cases are recorded in areas from Phuket, Phang Nga, Kho Samui, and Kho Pha Ngan.

Prevention and treatment: Anti-mosquito bite measures should be taken in risky areas. Preventive anti-malarial medication can be taken before and whilst travelling to the high risk areas.

Dengue

Diseases background: Listed as one of Thailand’s infectious diseases to watch for in 2018, dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and, sometimes causing a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. A person infected by the dengue virus come out with severe flu-like symptoms. The contamination, also called ‘break-bone’ fever affects infants, children and adults alike and it could be incurable. The appearances of dengue fever vary according to the age of the patient.

Risk and prevalence: The disease is endemic throughout the country in rainy season (May to October) in both urban and rural areas, with elevated risk in the northeastern part of the country. Aedes aegypti, the mosquitoes responsible for dengue fever, can also spread yellow fever and Zika virus.

Treatment and prevention: No specific treatment for Dengue virus. Using mosquito repellents and getting rid of any water stagnation are recommended to prevent risks of the disease.

Japanese Encephalitis

Disease background: Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito borne virus infection and most common vaccine-preventable cause of encephalitis in Asia. Acute encephalitis syndrome was defined as sudden onset of fever with neurological signs such as altered mental status, motor deficit, sensory deficit and seizures.

Risk and prevalence: Outbreaks occur mostly in the northern region (Chiang Mai Valley) found in the agricultural countryside, with seasonal peaks from May to October.

Treatment and prevention: There is no efficient anti-viral treatment available. Protection from mosquito bites and vaccination are the only effective ways reported. Vaccination is suggested for travellers and expatriates who stays in rural endemic areas for at least one month during the rainy season.

Leptospirosis

Disease background: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease contracted through direct contact with the urine of infected animals or with a urine-contaminated environment. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, chills, redness of the eyes, abdominal pain, jaundice, haemorrhages in the skin and mucous membranes, vomiting, diarrhoea, and rash.

Risk and prevalence: Leptospirosis is most common in urban slum areas due to inadequate sewage disposal and water treatment. Travellers participating in water-related activities can be at risk. Visiting agricultural or flooded areas can also increase exposure.

Treatment and prevention: Avoiding suspicious water contact such as in canals, swamps, lakes and rivers may reduce its risk.

Soil-transmitted worm diseases

Disease background: Soil-transmitted helminth (worm) infections are among the most common infections worldwide especially in poverty-stricken communities. They are transmitted by eggs present in human excrement which in turn pollute soil in areas where sanitation is poor.

Symptoms include diarrhoea, abdominal pain, malnourishment, general malaise and weakness, and impaired growth and physical development.

Risk and prevalence: The disease remains prevalent in certain rural areas of Thailand. Disease statistics based on a national survey in 2009 reported as high as 18.1% of Thais population suffer from intestinal parasitic infection, especially in the northeastern and southern regions of Thailand.

Treatment and prevention: The WHO recommended medicines; albendazole and mebendazole are effective, inexpensive and easy to administer even by non-medical personnel. Practice good food and body hygiene as well as having cooked food is recommended to prevent infection.

Tag : Phuket, Thailand, 2024, July, Doctor, Health, Sickness, Karon, Kata, Travel

Songkran, the Thai traditional new year, falls on April 13, which is also National Elderly Day.

Two more holidays were later added on April 14 and 15 as National Family Day and Thai New Year Day, respectively, to allow the Thais more time to celebrate reunion with their families.

Populist party Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who chairs the National Soft Power Strategy Committee, announced the plan on Dec 1 on her Facebook page.

She said that the soft power plan for 2024 has started, with 12 subcommittees across 11 industries proposing budgets to boost the creative economy.

“Another exciting topic discussed today was the plan for Songkran Festival next year,” said Ms Paetongtarn.

Chairperson of the festival industry promotion subcommittee Chadatip Chutrakul said that the water festival will be a celebration of the Thai new year being listed as Unesco’s world cultural heritage.

She added that stage performances and exhibitions will be held across key locations in Bangkok during the Songkran Festival, including Sanam Luang, Lan Khon Mueang town square, and Royal Pavilion Mahajetsadabadin.

As the end of the year approaches, the vibrant island of Phuket gears up for an explosion of festivities that paint the town in hues of celebration. While New Year’s Eve may not hold traditional significance in Thai culture, the locals are always up for a good party. In this extensive guide, we’ll share our top picks for where to countdown in Phuket, from its famous beaches to the cultural heart of Old Phuket Town and the lively Bangla Road.

Where to Countdown in Phuket?

1.Phuket’s Beaches

Phuket’s sandy shores transform into colossal party venues each December, with Patong Beach taking the lead. However, other beaches like Karon, Kata, Paradise, and Bangtao also host their share of revelry. Picture hundreds gathered on the sand, creating a festive atmosphere with personal fireworks, floating lanterns, and libations. Each beach carries its unique charm, providing a variety of experiences for ushering in the New Year.

Patong Beach

No list of the best beaches in Phuket could be complete without mentioning Patong. Undoubtedly the most popular stretch of coastline on the island, being generally busy right along its 2.5 km length. However, there’ is no part of Phuket with a livelier atmosphere. The town behind the beach is home to many great restaurants and hotels, as well as the best of Phuket’s nightlife, while the beach itself has nice sand and offers plenty of attractions and activities.

Karon Beach

Karon Beach has the interesting honour of having the squeakiest sand in Phuket. Fine and soft, it makes a funny sound when you walk on it. At 3.3 km in length, it’s the third-longest beach in Phuket and is close to being perfectly straight. It’s beautifully lined with trees for a lot of the southern end, with volleyball nets and beachfront restaurants in the northern half. The sea here is very approachable, though it is noted for its strong riptides in the low season. There are virtually no rocks along the length of the beach, so you can take a cooling dip with no risk of hurting your feet.

Kata Beach

Kata Beach has it all – beautiful soft sand, nodding palm trees, clean waters with a soft seabed, good surfing in the low season, and snorkelling in the high season, and a fantastic laid-back atmosphere. Colourful long-tail boats are moored at the northern end, with a few budget food and drinks vendors often found nearby, while the southern end has a choice of beachfront hotels and restaurants and an exciting flow rider park at Surf House. At about 1.5 km in length, Kata Beach doesn’t usually get too crowded, either.

Bangtao Beach

At 6 km in length, Bangtao is one of the longest beaches in Phuket. Along that length, you’ll find some of the island’s top hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs, making it a popular place for all kinds of visitors and locals. While the scenery is perhaps not as picturesque and the sand not as soft as some of Phuket’s other notable beaches, Bangtao is still one of the best beaches in Phuket, thanks to the sheer variety of nearby attractions and the sheer size. This simply means it’s never that hard to find a quiet spot to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Nai Harn Beach

For a more laid-back yet enchanting New Year’s Eve, Nai Harn Beach stands out among the Phuket beaches. Nestled on the island’s southern tip, Nai Harn offers a tranquil escape from the bustling crowds. The beach, surrounded by lush green hills, provides a serene backdrop for a more intimate celebration. As the sun sets over the Andaman Sea, beachgoers can enjoy the picturesque view, making it an ideal spot for a romantic countdown. While the festivities here are not as grandiose as Patong, the intimate setting and natural beauty make Nai Harn a hidden gem for those seeking a more relaxed and contemplative start to the new year.

Banana Rock Beach

For adventurous souls seeking a unique New Year’s experience, Banana Rock Beach is the offbeat choice that promises a memorable celebration. Tucked away from the mainstream party scenes, this secluded beach provides an exclusive setting for a more private and personalised countdown. The rugged coastline and pristine sands create a canvas for an unconventional celebration. Whether you bring your own fireworks or simply enjoy the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, Banana Rock Beach offers a tranquil escape for those looking to welcome the new year with a touch of solitude and adventure. As the clock strikes midnight, the unspoiled beauty of Banana Rock Beach sets the stage for a one-of-a-kind start to the year.

Additionally, for those who want a beach party atmosphere with a little more coordination, a beach club is a great place to celebrate New Year in Phuket. The beach clubs around Phuket are already great places to party, so they naturally make excellent places to be on 31st December, with first-class DJ sets, fine food, and fancy cocktails.

2.Old Phuket Town – The Cultural Countdown

While the beaches offer a more laid-back ambience, Old Phuket Town presents a cultural and historical setting for the countdown. Amidst the charming Sino-Portuguese architecture, the streets come alive with art, music, and local performances. It’s a different flavour of celebration, perfect for those seeking a break from the beach party scene.

3.Bangla Road

On New Year’s Eve 2024 in Phuket, Bangla Road, Phuket’s party central, transforms into a lively spectacle reminiscent of Songkran. The bustling nightlife street kicks into high gear, with every bar pulsating with energy. Loud music, flowing drinks, and exuberant crowds define the atmosphere, providing a unique experience that sets this night apart from the rest of the year.

4.Paradise Plaza

Arguably the highlight of Bangla Road—and worthy of a separate mention—are the nightclubs. The main ones each have special events for New Year, featuring great guest DJs and drinks offers. They’ll often have some kind of theme for the night, so check out their offerings for an unforgettable night.

For those seeking a more coordinated beach party experience, Paradise Plaza is an excellent choice. The beach clubs in this area elevate the celebration with top-notch DJ sets, delectable food, and exquisite cocktails. It’s a refined way to welcome the New Year against the backdrop of Phuket’s stunning coastal scenery.
